Il existe peu de documents originaux pour permettre aux historiens de comprendre comment le coup dâÃtat de Seyyed Ziya et de Reza Khan en 1921 sâest déroulé. Les journaux de deux diplomates français, Georges Ducrocq (attaché militaire) et Hélène Hoppenot (épouse du chargé dâaffaires) nous donnent des informations de première main sur lâopinion publique et sur les activités des Britanniques ainsi que sur la vie quotidienne avant, pendant et après février 1921. Ils donnent des portraits contrastés de quelques uns des principaux politiciens iraniens et de personnages européens aussi importants que Starosselsky, Dickson et de nombreux autres.
Few original documents enable historians to understand how the 1921 coup of Seyyed Ziya and Reza Khan was staged. The diaries of two French diplomats, Georges Ducrocq (military attaché) and Hélène Hoppenot (wife of the French chargé dâaffaires) give us first hand information on public opinion, on the British activities and on everyday life before, during and after February 1921. They give contrasting portraits of main Iranian politicians and of such important European actors as Starosselsky, Dickson, Norman and many others.

"George Alfred Jean Ducrocq (1874â1927) was Franceâs military attaché in Tehran in 1919â21. Hélène Hoppenot, née Delacour (1894â1990), was the wife of Henri Hoppenot, who served as the French chargé dâaffaires in the Iranian capital in the same years. Both wrote private diaries during their stay in Iran. Yann Richard has resurrected these writingsâand their authorsâby publishing them in a flawlessly edited version accompanied by informative commentary and followed by a 100-page prosopography covering all of Iranâs major political figures of the period. Ducrocq and Hoppenotâs observations offer insight into many hidden corners of Iranâs history immediately following World War I and leading up to Reza Khanâs coup of 1921, a period that remains curiously understudied."[..] "The edition under review should invite scholars to incorporate the French archives next time they write about this period. No one working on Vosuq al-Dowla, Starroselsky or Reza Khan in his run-up to power can henceforth afford to overlook this material.
