We are saddened by the news of Dr. Harriet Zurndorferâs passing.
Dr. Zurndorfer was born in Baltimore on November 9, 1946 and sadly passed away on March 18, 2026. She founded the journal NAN NÃ in 1995, and had worked as its Editor in Chief ever since. Her passing is a great loss for the field of Women & Gender Studies and China Studies.

NAN NÃ is an interdisciplinary, international, peer-reviewed journal featuring original studies related to men, women, and gender in the fields of early to contemporary Chinese history, literature, linguistics and language, anthropology, archeology, art and music, law, philosophy, medicine/science, and religion.
NAN NÃ contains a book review section on recent publications in womenâs and gender studies. The journal occasionally features review articles and reports about important developments in gender studies. To best reach a wide spectrum of researchers, NAN NÃ is written in English.

Harriet T. Zurndorfer (Ph.D. 1977 from the University of California, Berkeley in Chinese history) is an Affiliated Fellow of the Leiden Institute for Area Studies in the Faculty of Humanities, Leiden University in the Netherlands where she has worked since 1978. She is the author of Change and Continuity in Chinese Local History (1989), China Bibliography: A Research Guide to Reference Works about China Past and Present (1995; paperback edition 1999), editor of the compilation Chinese Women in the Imperial Past: New Perspectives (1999), and has published more than 200 learned articles and reviews.
