This study reevaluates intraethnic party systems, focusing on the diverse landscape of Kurdish parties in Iraq. Leveraging Lipset and Rokkan’s framework, it examines how linguistic, religious, regional, and class cleavages shape the formation of ethnic parties within the Kurdish community. Challenging the notion that ethnic identity solely dictates party dynamics, the analysis highlights how subethnic disparities influence political affiliations. By exploring these dimensions, this paper enriches understandings of intraethnic competition and the socioeconomic underpinnings of Kurdish nationalism, offering insights into ethnic party systems in divided societies.
