His career spanning several decades, Dieter Christensen (1932â2017) was a leading international specialist on Kurdish music. His numerous articles were based on fieldwork conducted with his wife, Nerthus Christensen (1932â2003), in the provinces of Siirt and Hakkâri (Turkey) in 1958 and 1965, and in Mahabad (Iran) in 1962. After 1970, Christensen moved to the United States and discontinued his research on Kurdish music. Only after his retirement did he return to this field of study. However, an extensive monograph on Kurdish music remained unfinished at the time of his death. Following his passing, Christensenâs research materials, including fieldwork diaries, notes, transcriptions, and numerous unpublished sound recordings and photographs, were transferred to the Berlin Phonogramm-Archiv. This paper offers an overview of Christensenâs bequest and discusses his methodology in the broader context of the history of comparative musicology and ethnomusicology.
Bi karîyera xwe ya çend dehsalan, Dieter Christensen (1932â2017) pisporekî navneteweyî yê pêÅengê muzîka Kurdî bû. Gelek gotarên wî li ser xebata meydanî ya digel jina wî Nerthus Christensenê (1932â2003) hatine kirin, li parêzgehên Sêrt û Hekariyê (Tirkiye) di salên 1958 û 1965an da, û li Mahabadê (Ãran) di sala 1962an da. PiÅtî sala 1970an, Christensen çû Amerîkayê û lêkolîna xwe ya li ser muzîka Kurdî rawestand. Lê piÅtî xaneÅînbûna xwe ew vegeriya vê qada lêkolînê. Lê, monografek berfireh li ser muzîka Kurdî di dema mirina wî da hêÅta neqediyabû. PiÅtî mirina wî, materyalên lêkolînê yên Christensen, digel rojnivîskên xebata meydanî, not, transkrîpsiyon û gelek tomarên deng û wêneyên nehatine weÅandin, bo ArÅîva Fonograma Berlînê hatin veguheztin. Ev gotare nêrînek giÅtî li ser wesiyeta Christensenî pêÅkêŠdike û rêbaza wî di çarçoveya berfirehtir ya dîroka muzîkolojiya berawirdî û etnomûzîkolojiyê da nîqaÅ dike.
