Abstract

This essay explores the relationship of the Wagner Book to the knowledge of its time, especially to the magic arts. Scientific discussions of the time are parodied from the perspective of belief in and fear of the devil. Although the differences between natural knowledge and the magical arts seem somewhat blurred, the narrative presents this knowledge as particularly useful for Wagner’s career as a sorcerer and a life of vice. This specific use of knowledge is supported by the devil, and the book values this accordingly.
