Abstract

Throughout Mesopotamian history, rulers are celebrated as charismatic youthful leaders. This is true for both textual and visual representations. Yet a single surviving statue in the collection of the MusÃ©e du Louvre (âHead of a Ruler;â Sb 95), dated to the very late third or early second millennium BCE, represents an exception to this standard, showing a royal figure with an aged visage. Celebrated in modern scholarship as a naturalistic rendering of a ruler and a possible portrait of Hammurabi of Babylon, the statue head has yet to be considered in relationship to ideals of kingship. This contribution seeks to facilitate a shift in focus by interrogating earlier scholarship and exploring how we might situate the âHead of a Rulerâ statue in its historical setting.
