Abstract

This essay examines the use of multiple voices in Eddie Huang’s memoir Fresh Off the Boat, arguing that Huang empowers himself by incorporating discourses from popular culture, Afro-American hip-hop, Chinese Confucian teaching, consumer culture, and elsewhere to construct his identity as an Asian American male. A study of the way Huang weaves competing viewpoints and voices into his narrative reveals the challenges of existing on the margins of American and Chinese communities; of negotiating intergenerational conflicts; of forming interethnic alliances; and of dealing with negative gender and racial stereotypes.
