Abstract

Offering a much-needed positive revaluation of didacticism, this paper first identifies the didactic mode as an essential aspect of literary representations of science. It then explores literature’s potential to empower readers in their ability to navigate the increasing influence of science on contemporary life. The paper contextualises the negative connotations didacticism has acquired in literary criticism and argues that the concept’s complex aesthetic and epistemic functions have been neglected as a result. Introducing a differentiation between moral didacticism and epistemic didacticism, this paper uses the example of two novels on genetic science, Simon Mawer’s Mendel’s Dwarf (1997) and Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake (2003), to show how the didactic exposition of scientific knowledge in the novels intimately shapes their aesthetics as well as their offer of socio-political empowerment. In Mendel’s Dwarf, epistemic didacticism produces an understanding of the ethical and political stakes surrounding new genetic technologies, while in Oryx and Crake didactic representations of genetic knowledge fulfil an important genre function, grounding the text’s exploration of potential future consequences of genetic research in current scientific debates. Updating discussions of literary knowledge and combining them with discourses of empowerment, Hamann-Rose reclaims didacticism as a central category in literary scholarship.
