This volume is dedicated to the memory of Robert Mankin (1952–2017) who shared his erudition on the circulation of ideas with such generosity. He shaped our understanding of the questions debated here, sketching the complicated equilibrium which qualified the trade of ideas in the eighteenth century, showing how thinkers engineered their works wading through floods of paper and tides of knowledge. In his cruel absence, let us open this book with the words of the thinker who influenced him so deeply:
