Abstract

This chapter is concerned with the region of Zambezia that would become Southern Rhodesia. In the course of that transformation, a variety of different legal personalities laid claims to this region of Africa, among them, corporations and concession hunters. Analogy gifted Europeans with a method of rationalising their intrusive and, eventually, conquering conduct, in view of a community that was perceived to be defective in the substance of sovereignty. The first half of this chapter is concerned with how Lobengula and amaNdebele were dispossessed. The second part of this chapter shows how a number of old disputes â over concessions and corporations â resurfaced to make their way into the courts of London. So far from Matabeleland, an extraordinary blending of anthropological and constitutional language took place in consideration of its history within these courts. That international legal thought was dismissive of African sovereignty in order to prepare the way for future European domination is uncontroversial to historians. This chapter reveals how international legal thought was mobilised in the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council (UK) to disqualify historic African sovereignties, in order to reconfigure the political relationship between a crown, a corporation, and a settler community, so that their ongoing domination of subordinated Africans was justified into the future.
