Abstract

This chapter takes a new look at Herderâs Auch eine Philosophie der Geschichte, which is widely regarded as a founding charter of historicism and a manifesto of German irrationalism against âtheâ Enlightenment. As such, it is seen to embrace cultural relativism and promote a new methodological goal of grasping the past by EinfÃ¼hlung. By comparing this famous text with John Barclayâs Icon animorum (1614), the chapter questions this reading and establishes a strong influence of Barclayâs ideas on the development of Herderâs historical thought from the Reisejournal to the Ideen zur Philosophie der Geschichte. The impact of this text on Auch eine Philosophie is particularly noticeable. Barclayâs text contained a survey of the character of (mostly) European nations, and dealt with the spirit of different epochs in history. Barclayâs notions of the varietas rerum and the different ingenia or indoles that characterise particular nations, epochs, and regions of the world played a central role in the historical writing of the Enlightenment, and not less so in Herderâs text. Herderâs knowledge of Barclay can be taken for granted; three copies of the book can be verified in his library. The chapter shows a marked difference between the âdivinationâ into the soul of the author, as a key notion of the reading of poetry, and the deciphering of the past: the historian has to abandon his familiar cultural attitude, in order to grasp the distance of his own time from the past; he has to be--in Barclayâs words--diversus cum diversis.
