Abstract

In this article, the author questions the supposed unity of the Spanish Catholic thought and the identification of the Spanish Catholicism with intolerance. It exposes the different ways of understanding tolerance in the Early Modern Spain:Â the freedom of conscience, the aptitude to adapt the inquisitorial judgments, the relaxed attitude of the old Christians towards the new Christians, the doubt and the uncertainty, the moral probabilism and the political dissimulation. According to the author, all these elements are different expressions of tolerance and challenge the topical vision of the fanatical Spain.
