Abstract

The descriptions of the martyrdom suffered in defence of the faith had a great impact in the Iberian hagiographic literature at the beginning of the Early Modern Age. From the beginning of the Christian era, a religious argument surrounding the figure of the martyr was being constructed in the West, combining elements of the classical tradition and the new religious theology. Since the sixteenth century, the religious Protestant rupture, the wars against the Ottomans and the overseas expansion of the Iberian powers, all prompted new accounts of martyrs located on the frontiers of the Catholic World. The missionaries of the religious orders were its main protagonists. Through the narration of their lives and deaths, the Catholic Church tried to build models of moral behaviour that would serve as an example to the spirituality of the faithful Catholic.
