Abstract

This chapter will address the role and impact of women in ancient sieges in Classical Greece. It will not only argue that women, as members of the community, were an integral part of any city under siege, but it will also try to place them in their wartime contexts. Scholarship has traditionally addressed the wartime representation of women like Andromache through a mythical lens. This paper, by contrast, addresses historical women and historical sieges and conflicts, such as the Carthaginian siege of Gela in 405 BC and the Peloponnesian War. These women are addressed by our sources in a collective setting, often alongside children. Sources frequently stress how sieges affected communities. Women, as part of these communities, had a significant role in ancient siege warfare. The strong relationship between city walls and siege warfare needs no restating here. Women’s contributions, however, do. This chapter focuses on wall-building as a community effort in which women were a vital component. It also explores women’s direct contributions to siege warfare such as the distribution of food and missiles to fighting men, women’s involvement in military tactics, and women’s diverse behaviour in war.
