Abstract

Assyrian bas-reliefs (ninth to seventh centuries BC) are a vitally important resource for the study and understanding of the siege in warfare in an Assyrian context. Interpreting the reliefs, however, is difficult. While the images of warfare (and sieges in particular) presumably attempted to reproduce how the Assyrian army operated in the field, they also followed the iconographic norms utilised by Assyrian artists, and therefore also represent their (re)interpretation of the action following the needs of clarity in the visual narratives as well as following artistic conventions. The present paper aims to analyse, from a diachronic perspective, the representations of sieges. Combining different sources (iconography, texts, and archaeology), the study seeks to investigate how images of sieges were organised, what they show, and finally what we can say about the Assyrian siege technique by the only observations of what the Assyrian artists wanted to show and disclose us.
