Acknowledgements
Like any human work, but especially a work composed by many sets of hands, Plato and the Moving Image has been made possible only through the collaborative effort of many people over more years than we care to remember. It is our duty, as well as our privilege, to share our sincere thanks to all of those whose work and whose encouragement made this project possible.
First, both editors would like to thank our able contributors, whose diligence and insights have given both shape and content to our thinking that Plato scholarship and film studies have much to learn from one another, and in this way gave life to this excellent book. We also extend sincere thanks to everyone at Brill, especially series editor Thorsten Botz-Bornstein, whose undying support has made this book possible, and Bram Oudenampsen for his wonderful advice and professionalism throughout the late stages of bringing forth the volume. Finally, the anonymous reviewer for Brill read the introduction and each chapter with serious attention and deep generosity, helping us to correct many small blemishes and to emphasize further the best parts of each chapter and the volume as a whole.
We also thank our home institutions, Beit Berl College and Bard College Berlin, for providing us with the material and academic environments in which to complete this work; Michael Weinman especially wishes to thank his colleagues Ewa Atanassow, Matthias Hurst, Bendetta Roux, and Irina Stelea for their work on the Plato Goes Live! series, which provided a space to develop thoughts recorded in both the introduction and his chapter herein. Last but not least, our deepest gratitude to our friends and colleagues for their intellectual inspiration and generous responses to drafts of some or all of what follows: Ami Asher, Andreas Avgousti, Nicholas Baer, Claudia Baracchi, Edward Butler, Andy German, and Russell Winslow, with special thanks to Nicholas Baer for inviting us to present and discuss the volume’s introduction at suny-Purchase. With so many to thank for these various reasons, we alone take responsibility for whatever errors remain.
Shai would like to extend his deepest thanks to his family for their loving support, especially his parents, Shlomo and Israela; his wife, Yael; and his children, Tal, Amir and Yuval. Michael gratefully acknowledges the constant support and incessant intellectual challenge he enjoys thanks to sharing a life with Irit and their children Rona and Ido.
