The Torah assumes that human beings should aspire to imitate the perfection of God. There is, however, one attribute of God that man should not imitate, namely, anger. Maimonides addresses this apparent contradiction by arguing that God’s anger is not real but feigned and that man, too, should feign anger if necessary. This paper aims to resolve the contradiction by arguing that God’s anger is not a defect but a perfection. It is the counterpart to God’s love as expressed in the giving of the Torah to the people of Israel. God would be imperfect if he were indifferent to the reception of this gift.
