Abstract

This chapter describes the successful campaign in New Zealand to ban the physical punishment of children by their parents. It examines the historical and cultural contexts of the use of physical force by parents. It analyses the arguments that were mounted on either side in the public debate that accompanied the campaign and how the new law and its application attempted to meet objections and satisfy competing interests. Belief in the appropriateness of physical punishment has fallen although substantial minority support for it persists and protagonists remain active.
