Abstract

The United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child (uncrc), which has the role of monitoring States’ compliance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child, has since its early days been active in seeking to eliminate corporal punishment. It has consistently urged States to ban corporal punishment in all settings and to promote ways of raising children without resorting to violence. The chapter explores the work of the Committee both at the general level through its General Comment No. 8 and in its recommendations to States all over the world. Certain shortcomings and inconsistencies are pointed out, as well as the interaction between the Committee’s work and that of other actors.
