The Adumbrationes consist of exegeses of certain pericopes of the âcatholicâ epistles (specifically 1Pet, Jude, 1John and 2 John) which have reached us thanks to the Latin translation commissioned by Cassiodorus and completed â perhaps â by Mutianus in the vi century. These four long fragments were traditionally considered part of Clementâs Hypotyposeis. Indeed, even though the title passed down to us through the manuscript tradition may a Latin equivalent of the Greek á½ÏοÏÏ ÏÏÏειÏ, and even if the manner of Clementâs exegesis in the Adumbrationes and the Hypotyposeis is substantially the same, there are many difficulties in identifying the Adumbrationes as a part of the Hypotyposeis. This paper discusses some of these difficulties and then explores how contents of Clementâs Adumbrationes could be considered as answers to his promises in the Stromateis of writing sort of a treatise on First Principles.
