Abstract

In an important passage in the seventh book of the Stromateis Clement seems to identify Scripture as âthe voice of the Lord.â Clement certainly has a high view of Scripture. We cannot, however, simply identify Scripture and âthe voice of the Lord,â since for Clement Scripture simultaneously represents and conceals the truth. Only as we read Scripture in the right way can we move beyond its symbolic language and approach truth. It takes faith to understand Scripture. One of the main reasons for this can be found in Clement's negative or apophatic theology. God, according to Clement, is one and indivisible and, for this reason, also infinite and incomprehensible. God can only be approached through faith. Scripture is only an indirect medium for âthe voice of the Lord,â rather than âthe voice of the Lordâ itself.
