Abstract

The relative clause attachment section examines the nature of bias (if any) favouring high attachment for sentences. The adjectival phrase attachment section examines Frazier and Clifton's (1996) distinction between primary and nonprimary relationships. The prepositional phrase attachment section examines possible interaction of prosody and argument structure in attachment decisions. The dynamics of attachments section proposes a tentative generalization of the notions discussed in the prepositional phrase attachment section. The proposed interpretations are consistent with the minimal commitment principle, which implies that certain structural decisions are postponed until helpful semantic information becomes available. The results of the adjectival phrase attachment section and the prepositional phrase attachment section suggest that the same parsing principles probably apply to nonprimary and primary relationships.
