Using Herbert Marcuse’s rationalization paradigm this chapter aims to demonstrate that the ways in which academic knowledge is created and accumulated have become increasingly rational and one-dimensional. It is argued that the rationalization and one-dimensionality of knowledge creation and accumulation have far-reaching consequences for both academia and society. It is further argued that the on-going rationalization of academic knowledge seems to have resulted in (a further) erosion of the concept of Bildung in favour of a more instrumental approach towards knowledge and learning.
