The purposes of this study were to 1) create the Attitudes Toward Graphing Questionnaire, an instrument to determine graphing attitudes, and 2) determine if a relationship exists between the Attitudes Toward Graphing Questionnaire scores and biology-related graphing skills for 55 first-year students in an introductory biology non-majors laboratory course. Graphing skills included interpretation of graphs and graph constructions from both student-generated and researcher-provided data. A multiple regression analysis used the total score on the Attitudes Toward Graphing Questionnaire as the independent variable with dependent variables of the total scores for each of the graphing assessments (graphing interpretations, line graph construction for student-generated data, line graph construction for researcher-provided data, and the student American College Testing mathematics score). A significant difference was found between the mean graph construction score for graphs from student-generated data and the mean graph construction score for graphs from researcher-provided data. No significant relationship was noted between the Attitudes Toward Graphing Questionnaire total score and the graph assessment instruments although significant relationships were noted between ACT mathematics score and graph construction and interpretation scores. Two conclusions were drawn as a result of this study of graphing attitudes and skills: 1) students score higher on graph constructions from data they collect than graphs constructed from provided data, and 2) student attitudes toward graphing do not relate to student achievement in the interpretation and construction of graphs.
