This study looks at how teacher leadership can promote effective science education in elementary and middle school settings. It seeks to explore the ways in which ten K-8 school teachers participating in a science content enrichment and leadership program at A large North American University crafted and enacted their roles as instructional leaders to support their peers’ science content knowledge and pedagogic skills. The program is supported by the Maryland Higher Education Commission’s (MHEC Improving Teacher Quality Grant). Through qualitative interviews, observations, and student reflective journals this study investigated how the participants initiated, implemented, and supported the professional development of their colleagues to improve science learning and teaching for all within their schools. The promises, problems, and possibilities involved in school-based instructional leadership related to science education are illuminated. What, if any, factors facilitated or hindered their work as science leaders in schools? This investigation offers insight into how university-based professional development programs can support leadership among science teachers.
