Research on organizational learning in schools that operate as professional learning communities is reviewed in this chapter, with special attention given to the role of teacher leaders. Organizational learning processes used in these schools enable teacher leaders to identify and solve problems of practice that affect student learning. Through collaborating with colleagues these teachers build their collective knowledge base enabling them to provide students with intellectual challenges in the classroom. Unfortunately evidence about the effect of professsional learning community on student learning is weak but promising in most studies. Research on the combination of professional learning community, authentic pedagogy, and authentic assessment offers the best empirical evidence of schools that prepare students for the knowledge economy. Research is needed to explicate the pedagogy used in professional learning communities and its effect on students’ intellectual preparation for the global workforce.
