Labor unions were formed for workers and by workers, borne out of a need that grew in the workplace for economic justice, dignity, and fairness. Workers realized that with a collective union voice they have a greater likelihood of winning wage increases, improving workplace conditions and obtaining protections from unfair practices by the employer. Union membership and union contracts protect workers’ rights on the job with contractual safeguards and procedures that shield workers from unilateral decisions. The labor movement has traditionally been involved with social justice causes, from the Civil Rights struggle to relief efforts in natural disasters. This chapter outlines ideas for infusing greater knowledge of labor in school studies. We identify teaching resources for sharing concepts like solidarity, working for wages, and what young people, from pre-kindergarten to adulthood, can gain from knowing about the union advantage.
