As out of favour as it may seem to be, we will be analysing why we need a student-centred approach for the teaching of art. This in itself is not a new concept. However, Merleau-Ponty’s thesis on this matter is. He tells us something new about the teaching of art that is infectious and of commanding importance. Explained within an art-teaching context is how we might better understand the child’s own situation, natural attitude, and lived creative experience to transform teaching in art. In this regard, for Merleau-Ponty, it is the tutelage of the children’s surroundings, their personal body-perceptions and the adumbrations of their movements and experiences which, in a unified way, directly affects vision and visibility in art education.
