We conducted this study to test our hypothesis that activities of digestive enzymes in small intestine of the pig have diurnal variations. Sixteen barrows aged 4 weeks were individually kept in pens under a 12 h bright (7 am to 7 pm) and 12 h dark (7 pm to 7 am) lighting condition. During the three week feeding trial, we measured voluntary feed intake during three separate time periods; 7 am to 1 pm, 1 pm to 7 pm, and 7 pm to 7 am. Activities of disaccharidases (sucrase, maltase, and lactase) and aminopeptidase N in jejunum and ileum were measured at four time points (3 am, 9 am, 3 pm, and 9 pm). The voluntary feed intake per hour of the pigs during the three separated time periods were 49±5 g from 7 am to 1 pm, 75±5 g from 1 pm to 7 pm, and 25±5 g from 7 pm to 7 am, respectively. The average activities of all the enzymes determined were the highest at 9 am and the second-highest at 9 pm in jejunum. As for ileum, the average activities of disaccharidases were also the highest at 9 am while no certain tendency was observed for those of aminopeptidase N.
