The California Federation of Teachersâ Labor in the Schools Committee has worked for twenty years to bring instruction about labor history and the contemporary labor movement to K-12 students. It has four functions: information clearinghouse, curriculum development, teacher training, and facilitator of cooperation between labor and educational institutions. The committeeâs history represents one example, with its share of successes and failures, of how a focused effort by a group of teacher union activists with moderate resources can make a difference in studentsâ understanding of who makes history, as well as in teachersâ understanding of how to teach about work, workers, and unions, and their place in society.
