Soybean harvest at either too early or too late a stage usually leads to yield reduction, due to either immature grain or pod dehiscence for early and late harvest date, respectively. The accurate prediction of soybean maturity date can help producers to make advanced arrangements for labor and machinery in order to increase the soybean yield. Satellite remote sensing has shown very promising results for within- and between-field dynamic crop monitoring. In this paper, a soybean maturity date predicting model was developed through regression analysis by using variations in normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and normalized difference water index (NDWI) derived from HJ-1A CCD and HJ-1B IRS imagery (HJ is the abbreviation of ‘HuanJing’, which means environment in Chinese; CCD is charge-coupled device, while IRS is infra-red scanner). The soybean maturity date map of Hongxing Farm was produced.
