The Garrano is an ancient Portuguese pony breed that was recently proposed as National Portuguese heritage. This small horse is recognized as a Portuguese social-cultural patrimony, and constitutes an economical benefit for local populations due to its diverse use. Garranos are bred in semi-wild conditions, with herds walking freely in Peneda Gerês National Park mountains. Recent reports suggest that Garranos are leaving the mountains and occupying lower grasslands, searching for better feeding conditions, and contributing to biomass accumulation in scrublands with a higher fire risk. It is our opinion that Garrano horses, under controlled management, can play an important role in controlling shrub encroachment and maintaining biodiversity, simultaneously producing environmental and socioeconomic benefits for the rural populations in these areas. This work intends to contribute to the current knowledge of the Garrano horse and to provide future study areas in order to maintain its sustainable breeding system.
