The use of nanotechnology in the area of food and agriculture is progressing rapidly. New products and applications appear, while regulation lags behind. There is vast scientific uncertainty related to the effects of nanotechnology applications on human and animal health, as well as on the environment. In 2005, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) set up a technical committee for developing nanotechnology standards. These standards may form the basis for national and EU regulation of nanotechnology and nanofood, and may therefore play an important role in the governance of nanofood. There are, however, challenges related to both scientific quality control and the consideration of societal dimensions in the ISO nanotechnology work. In order for ISO standards to function as a tool for socially robust and sustainable development of nanofood a greater variety of researchers, NGOs and other stakeholders should get involved in the ISO work. As this presupposes funding, greater attention should be paid to the ISO work by relevant authorities. In general, the role of ISO in the development of nanotechnology should be subject to broader public discussion.
