Ethical consumerism is a crucial factor in the current food paradigm shift, highlighting the growing power of consumers in restructuring the mechanics of the food chain dynamics towards food security. Consumers along with other key actors in the food chain such as the government, farmers and the retailers whilst progressively united in accepting that altruism in our food system is achievable through pursuits in sustainability, do however, vary tremendously in how the principles and methods of sustainability could be effectively applied to balance all the stakes. All seem to recognise that proper knowledge, education, accountability, transparency and proper engagement of all the stakeholders are key tools towards the achievement of food security and sustainability goals. Transformation of global citizens into food citizens is therefore a dynamic process that requires a broad brush and cross sectoral and partnership approach within food security equation. Participatory tools and deliberative democracy need to be applied in designing and coordinating initiatives targeting the food chain as well as a framework for systematic assessment and monitoring of these activities as a collective. This approach also requires a new form of engagement by Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to reinvigorate their collaborative role with the market and public sector. Although faced with huge opportunities created by the change in governance, the traditional central position of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) as key agents of social intervention to organise this complex is now very crucial and challenging and requires a reassessment especially in relation to their role, nature and capacity to deliver a quality service that meets the needs of the community and food chain requirements.
