In view of the high probability that in less than a decade the first generation of edible animal muscle (meat) in vitro will be ready to be launched on the market, it is essential to initiate a multidisciplinary discussion that addresses a series of issues derived from this reality. Thus, throughout the paper, the authors deal with some of the most important legal and ethical issues arising from the possible largescale production of in vitro meat. As we know, at least in Europe, there are no rules regulating the processes of production, trade and consumption of this new product. Therefore, one research objective has been to establish some basic points to be taken into account during the process of development and structuring of the rules that regulate this material. In this manner, the precautionary principle, (bio) safety in the production of this food, the problems that eventually may result from the protection of copyright and industrial property, the applicable laws (e.g. GMO’s Laws, in view of the absence of a specific regulation), among others, are some of the issues discussed throughout the article. Finally, from a utilitarian perspective, the authors analyze and suggest some answers to the ethical issues arising from the eventual marketing of this new food product.
