In vitro meat is muscle tissue grown from animal stem cells through tissue engineering. It does not yet exist but the idea offers great promise: it potentially helps to solve the growing problems of meat. Technological promises are typically met by moral responses in which scepticism and critical questions are prominent. But debates on in vitro meat so far deviate from that pattern. Society seems to call for its development, and moral evaluation tends to be very positive as well; clearly, antagonism between technology and morality is not inevitable. Since the development of in vitro meat is still in an early phase, it offers the opportunity of an early integration and co-development of biotechnological, social and ethical research. We hope to make full use of this opportunity in a joint and multidisciplinary research project of Utrecht University and Wageningen UR.
