Does it make any sense to talk about the dignity of plants? The article 120.2 of the Federal Constitution of the Swiss Confederation of 18 April 1999 seems to think so, as far as it mentions the dignity of living beings. The question which arises therefrom is whether plants should be included in those living beings and what the consequences of that inclusion should be. In order to clarify this issue, the Swiss Federal Ethics Committee on Non-Human Biotechnology (ECNH) published in April 2008 a Report entitled ‘The dignity of living beings with regard to plants. Moral consideration of plants for their own sake’. That report stated that plants possess inherent moral value, that is to say, dignity. The aim of this paper is to explore the problems that such a conclusion implies, pointing out its deep incoherencies.
