In the process of adapting Bioscience Degree Programs to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), the Spanish government wrote a White Book defining learning outcomes for each of the three cycles. It established that among other competences, Bioscience students need to develop the ability to deal with ethical and legal issues regarding their professional areas. That means also being capable of reasoning about the environmental and social impact of advances in biosciences and some ability to arrive at reasoned decisions that take into account all perspectives. This paper presents the project being carried out by the Department of Constitutional Law and History of Political Thought in the University of the Basque Country (Spain) with a new subject called ‘Law and Ethics in the Biosciences’. For three new bioscience degree programs (Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), this subject is going to be compulsory from 2010/2011 on (6.00 ECTS). The goal of this subject is to give the students the necessary knowledge for the correct understanding of main social, legal and ethical issues regarding: ecology and environment, endangered species protection, environmental risks assessment, biomedical research, animal experimentation, biotechnology and agri-food technologies. This content will be developed theoretically and complemented by practical seminars in which students will have the possibility of being confronted by some of the legal and ethical issues. The application of ethical theory to specific topics will be done via case studies.
