Animal use in biomedical research presents an ethical dilemma: between the potential benefits for human health and the costs borne by the animals. The 3Rs principle â Replacement, Reduction, Refinement â emphasizes the need not only to replace animal experiments with animal free alternatives, but also to reduce the number of animals used and promote their welfare as a compromise solution whenever animal experiments are inevitable, aiming overall for a more positive ethical balance. Even with existing regulation and supervision of animal use, the individual researcherâs responsibility is still decisive in implementing the 3Rs. Training in laboratory animal science aims to raise researchersâ awareness and increase their knowledge, but its effect on scientistsâ attitudes has not so far been systematically assessed. Sixty-one participants in three FELASA Cat-C courses in Portugal were surveyed in a selfadministered questionnaire. Questions related mainly to the 3Rs and their application, attitudes to animal use and the ethical review of animal experiments. One year later, all respondents were asked to answer a similar questionnaire (46% response rate) with added self-evaluation questions on the impact of training. Overall, these preliminary results suggest that the course is effective in promoting awareness and increasing knowledge, in particular as regards Refinement. However, participation in the course did not change perceptions of the current and future need for animal use in research.
