Although the use of animals in biomedical research leads to a strong debate regarding ethics, the study of animal models is extremely valuable to understand the genetic basis of infectious disease. Both the research animals and humans may benefit from the information obtained in the genetic association analyses, which can lead to the discovery of vaccines or treatments. Our group studies two retrovirus-induced infectious diseases affecting sheep, Ovine Pulmonary Adenocarcinoma (OPA) and Maedi-Visna (MV). Animals used in the research are protected by strict legislation which dictates that any distress or suffering caused to the animals must be minimized in housing, transport, scientific procedures and euthanasia. The amount of information obtained from the research also leads to a debate, regarding the ownership of the genetic data and the way it may be used.
