An area that is attracting a lot interest of today in the legal, scientific and ethical aspects within the field of biotechnology is the creation of genetically modified animals. A genetically modified organism is an organism that carries a gene in each of its cells, of which the sequence does not belong to that organism. In animals this entails introducing the transgene during the first stages of the fertilization process; and reconstructing that animal from cells that carry the transgene through the creation of chimeras or nuclear transfer. The uses for these transgenic animals are currently broad and beneficial since they are used in the field of human health, as well as in production. Indeed, there are several research projects underway examining the use of transgenic animals in the field of biomedicine. The purpose of the research is to expand our knowledge about genes potentially involved in human pathologies, define their functions and metabolic pathways of application, and determine possible therapeutic targets. In addition, they are used to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of possible therapeutic compounds, in order to obtain reliable and safe organs for allotransplant, etc. They are also utilised in industries, such as the pharmaceutical industry, which is attempting to obtain therapeutic compounds from transgenic animals, or the agricultural industry, which is trying to improve the quality and quantity of fish and stock breeding species, or to obtain derived products, with bigger or better food characteristics. In conclusion, all these industries have committed themselves to this technology, expecting that it will bring about an improvement in their products and future benefits. However, we must be aware that this process must respect legal regulations.
