This contribution dealt with the more relevant European norms concerning the breeding conditions and care of farm animals. The application of these norms takes place in the European Union built, fundamentally, upon a market forces based approach. This implies their understanding as an instrument of homogenized practices in the sector which seek to prevent inequalities of conditions in competition. Beyond the critical evaluation, which, from an ethical point of view, is derived from subordinate animal protection to the structural and organizational necessities of the market, this fact conditions, notably, the practical reach of these provisions.
