The regulatory requirement to provide enrichment materials to farmed pigs has been translated into a project to design a computer game for pigs. A team of researchers of animals, ethics and game design have gathered to develop an enriched environment meant to challenge the cognitive abilities of domestic pigs, and to offer a site for interaction between humans and animals in a playful and meaningful way. With designing an interactive device, scientific questions on subjective experience and cognition can be connected in a tangible and practical way with philosophical and ethical questions regarding suffering, capabilities, and enrichment. This generates an opportunity to experience and explore these ‘heavy’ questions in new ways by researchers and the public. This paper identifies philosophical issues relevant to the design process and to our understanding of the nature of animal cognition, subjective experience and ethical relations between humans and animals. Several ethological experiments and enrichment devices are discussed to illustrate their particular implications for understanding relevant philosophical and ethical questions. The paper ends by exploring possible meanings of cognition, naturalness, and the implications for pig housing design and for moral views on the practice of pig farming.
