The Institute Technology, Theology and Science (TTN) and the Technology and Support Centre (TFZ) have set up a joint research project to explore whether the production of biomass for energy use in Bavaria can be ethically sound. In a first step, a three-phase ‘Ethical Delphi’ was carried out. In a second step, the results of the Ethical Delphi were correlated with paradigmatic and normative concepts that influence the debate in order to create a variation of the ‘Ethical Matrix’ tailored to energy from biomass. The so-created ethical tool was then applied to two different scenarios which were rapeseed for small-scaled oil production and sorghum for biogas production. In this paper, this newly developed ethical tool will be introduced and first interim results of the case studies presented.
