In this paper, an overview is given into the effects of antinutritional factors on the voluntary feed intake in pigs. Tabled values of research are presented including the inclusion level of the ingredient, diet information, weight/age of the pigs and voluntary feed intake. If available, the ingredient level of an antinutritional factor and its daily intake are also provided. From the data presented in this paper, no clear linear relationships or consistent effects were noticed between the level of antinutritional factors or its intake and voluntary feed intake in pigs. This might be due to the simultaneous presence of other undesired factors in a seed, to constituents (e.g. amino acids), or to factors originating from processing (e.g. Maillard products) in a way that the pigâs sensorial perception cannot be believed to be discriminative to only a single antinutritional factor. If this is generally true, factors hampering or stimulating feed intake in swine can be better considered from the point of view that all diet ingredients â raw or processed â have their specific problems. We identified two groups of ingredients that have a rather direct influence on feed intake when fed raw due to gut troubles or that influence palatability and thus are less consumed. Moreover, we identified two groups of antinutritional factors that either have short-term or longterm effects. The consequences for a number of diet ingredients and the validity of studying only feed intake are shortly discussed.
