This chapter provides a broad overview of how food intake might be controlled and develops a theory to act as a framework for future research. Animals, including pigs, learn to associate the sensory properties of foods with the internal signals generated after consumption and use this learned information as a key part of determining intake of foods and selection between foods. There are well-described effects on voluntary food intake of infusions of metabolites into the gastrointestinal tract and hormones into the bloodstream which suggest feedback pathways, carried in the peripheral nervous system to influence the CNS. There is also considerable circumstantial evidence in the pig that distension of the stomach and intestines play a part in limiting intake under some circumstances. Because of the convergence of signals as they pass to the CNS, it is likely that it is the total of the strengths of these signals that is involved in intake control but that this is not sufficient to provide a full explanation. It is proposed that differences in the current rate of supply of a food resource (e.g. energy, protein, bulk) and the optimal supply of that resource for the animal in question generates discomfort which the animal seeks to minimise (other factors that might cause discomfort, such as space allowance, can also be incorporated). The error, as a proportion of the ideal, is squared and the square root of the total for all the resources under consideration is used as a signal of total discomfort. Total discomfort is calculated for a range of food intakes (and choices) and thus the intake (and choice) at which total discomfort is minimum, hence the Minimal Total Discomfort (MTD) framework. Animal and food(s) parameters can be changed and the new MTD is found, with its accompanying intake (and choice). The outcomes are realistic but considerable further work is required before there is a chance of validating the model for pigs and of predicting intake sufficiently well for use in practical conditions.
