The Transition Cow Index1 (TCI^â¢) has been developed as a monitor of individual fresh cow health as it affects productivity at the herd level. Collection and summarization of cow and herd health records in the United States has proven to be challenging because of variations in disease diagnosis, inconsistent record keeping, lack of standardized input and other reasons. TCI utilizes herd performance data collected by milk recording organisations as a proxy for specific measurements of cow health. Therefore, it evaluates the results of herd health performance rather than attempting to record and summarize health and treatment events. This allows performance to be tracked over time and compared across herds. Data needed to produce the index is generally available in dairy records central databases from that collected by milk recording organisations.
