Subclinical metabolic disease frequently goes unnoticed and may be associated with clinical disease risks, impaired production, reduced reproductive performance, and increased risk of culling. Of the major subclinical metabolic diseases, the most published data currently exists for subclinical ketosis. Subclinical ketosis is common in lactating dairy cows with incidence rates above 40% in many herds. Risk of subclinical ketosis is influenced by many factors including parity, body condition score, season of calving, and herd management. Risk increases with increasing parity and higher body conditions precalving. There is a wide variation in herd incidence. Prevention is achieved largely through effective dry cow programs that encompass both good nutrition and excellent cow management.
