Emphasis should be returned to the interaction of demands for productivity with the impacts of suboptimal management systems on animals as the root cause of production diseases. Much has been learned about the temporal regulation of feed intake and metabolism in liver and adipose tissue of dairy cows during the periparturient period. However, triggers for production disease likely lie at the interface of environmental stressors and productivity. Frontiers for further research progress may lie in the areas of “psychoneuroimmuno-metabolism”, the “new biology” of adipose tissue and obesity, and applications of the various “–omics” technologies for high-throughout screening of expression of genes and proteins. Further progress demands a blurring of traditional disciplines such as nutrient metabolism, immunology, stress physiology, and neuroendocrine physiology, along with continued interaction with those clinicians and scientists working at the farm level.
