This paper looks at the achievements of ecumenism in the second half of the twentieth century, listing the many agreements that have been reached. It then poses the question of the promise and challenges of this in relation to interreligious dialogue, pointing out that the multicultural society is now a fact of life. The author then turns more specifically to Abrahamitic ecumenism, i.e. that between the Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In the third section he discusses positive markers for âunitive pluralism,â via three skandala in that ecumenism: the challenge of common prayer, the skandalon of our Christological quarrels and, finally, the skandalon of violence in the history of all three religions. In each of these areas the authors points to possible strategies for resolution.
